Cover 2 is a popular defensive scheme used in football to defend against both the run and the pass. It’s a zone defense where each defender is responsible for a specific area on the field. In this lesson, we will learn the basics of how to play Cover 2 defense.

  1. Positioning: The Cover 2 defense typically consists of two safeties playing deep, splitting the field in half, and five defenders underneath in zone coverage. The two safeties position themselves 12 to 15 yards from the line of scrimmage, and the other five defenders position themselves in a way to cover their designated areas.

  2. Responsibilities: In Cover 2, the two safeties are responsible for defending the deep half of the field on their respective sides, and the cornerbacks and middle linebacker are responsible for defending the flats and short zones. The two outside linebackers are responsible for covering the intermediate zones.

  3. Pass Coverage: The Cover 2 defense is primarily used to defend against the deep pass. The two safeties are responsible for not allowing any deep passes. The cornerbacks and the linebackers are responsible for covering the short and intermediate routes.

  4. Run Defense: In Cover 2 defense, the five defenders in the underneath zones are responsible for stopping the run. They have to read the run and quickly get to the ball carrier to stop the play.

  5. Disadvantages: The primary disadvantage of the Cover 2 defense is its vulnerability to short, quick passes, which can exploit the holes in the zones. The defense is also susceptible to the run game, especially if the front four fail to create pressure.

By understanding the basics of Cover 2 defense, you can effectively execute this defensive scheme and make it difficult for the offense to score.
