About Lesson

Introduction: Understanding the offensive terminology in football is essential for anyone who wants to learn how to play or coach the sport. This lesson will provide an overview of the key offensive terms and concepts that are commonly used in football.

  1. Formation – The arrangement of offensive players before the snap of the ball. The two most common formations are the “pro set” and the “shotgun.”

  2. Snap – The act of the center passing the ball to the quarterback to begin the play.

  3. Play-action – A play where the quarterback fakes a handoff to the running back and then passes the ball downfield.

  4. Zone blocking – A blocking scheme where offensive linemen are responsible for a specific area of the field rather than a specific defender.

  5. Screen pass – A pass play where the quarterback throws the ball to a running back or wide receiver behind the line of scrimmage, and then that player runs downfield with the help of blockers.

  6. Playbook – A collection of plays and formations that a team uses to move the ball downfield and score points.

  7. Down – Each play in football begins with a down. Teams have four downs to move the ball 10 yards downfield. If they succeed, they get a new set of four downs to continue their drive.

  8. Option – A play where the quarterback has the option to either hand the ball off to a running back or keep it and run it himself.

  9. Sweep – A running play where the ball carrier runs to the outside of the offensive line with the help of blockers.

  10. Huddle – The process of the offense coming together to discuss the next play before breaking the huddle and lining up for the snap.

Conclusion: This lesson provided an overview of the key offensive terminology used in football. By understanding these terms and concepts, players and coaches can better communicate and execute plays on the field.
