You do not need to be a Washington electrician to learn with us. Our general electrical program welcomes beginners, career changers, and people already working in the trades.

Our teaching specifically targets the residential sector: electrical fundamentals, circuits, wiring concepts, code, math, and safety. Build an understanding of how home electrical systems work and how to approach problems thoughtfully.

Washington Labor & Industries (L&I) sets electrical certification and education requirements. Here is how those requirements relate to your next step.
Working as an electrical trainee in Washington requires a valid training certificate and supervision by a properly certified electrician. Trainees must be at least 16; additional employment rules apply to minors. Joining an online course does not replace these requirements.
L&I: electrical trainee requirementsL&I lists 4,000 hours of qualifying experience and 48 hours of approved basic classroom instruction for the residential specialty examination path. Certification also requires passing the applicable exam. Residential (02) has a defined scope of work; it is not an unrestricted general electrical certificate.
L&I: electrician qualifications WAC 296-46B-920: residential scopeWashington electricians generally need 24 hours of approved continuing education every three years: 8 hours of code updates, 4 hours of Washington electrical laws and rules, and 12 hours of other approved education. Check your credit record and course eligibility with L&I.
L&I: approved education and coursesPNWTS offers the 48 hours of approved basic classroom instruction required for Washington electrical trainee certificate renewal every two years. Complete the designated trainee classes in the required in-person format to earn these hours. Trainee classroom credit is separate from electrician continuing education (CEUs); free lesson viewing alone does not earn renewal credit.

HVAC and Plumbing instruction will begin when we have instructors in place. These programs are not currently available, and we have not announced a start date.
HVAC systems rely on electrical power, motors, controls, and wiring. Understanding electrical fundamentals gives you a useful starting point for future HVAC study.
